Department Description:

The Department of Ophthalmology at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist currently employs 23 faculty in a collaborative and congenial environment. The cornea division includes three full-time clinical cornea faculty and one of the premier corneal fellowships in the country. We are a regional leader with established tertiary referrals and a large catchment area that encompasses all of Western North Carolina, as well as Eastern Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina, and West Virginia. Moreover, we are part of the third largest non-profit health system in the country due to our strategic partnership with Atrium Health, now part of Advocate Health. As part of this strategic alignment, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, located in Winston-Salem, NC, serves as the academic core of the entire health system.

Highlights
Our department currently trains four ophthalmology residents per class, as well as three vitreoretinal fellows, one cornea fellow, and one glaucoma fellow. In addition, we plan to add a pediatric ophthalmology fellow in the upcoming year. Our faculty have ample opportunity to participate in resident and medical student education, and clinical research and industry-funded clinical trials.
