Description & Requirements
Education and training are cornerstones of the program. The institution maintains long standing, ACGME accredited fellowship programs in general cardiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, vascular and cardiothoracic surgery, and advanced practice provider cardiovascular fellowships.
The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine was created in 2025. The Department transitioned from Internal Medicine to reflect the continued growth, clinical volume, and academic mission of cardiovascular services across the enterprise. The Section currently supports ~30 non invasive cardiology providers.
Primary site: Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Winston Salem
Secondary sites: High Point Medical Center, Lexington Medical Center, Davie Medical Center, Wilkes Medical Center, Hugh Chatham Health, Alleghany
Clinical affiliations with external rural hospitals: Iredell Health, Catawba Valley Medical Center, VA
Clinic Sites
Primary Clinic Site: Winston-Salem (multiple clinic sites within 15 minutes of Wake Forest Main campus)
Outreach clinics as needed: Wilkes Medical Center, Hugh Chatham Health, Premier, Greensboro, High Point Medical Center
Position Overview
Overall clinical responsibilities are on average 4.5 days total per week plus 0.5 day administrative time
Optional: 4.5 days each week on average of outpatient clinic only
Imaging responsibilities will be individualized based on Section needs and candidate expertise.
Team based care model using provider pods that include MDs and APPs; APPs manage the majority of return patient visits for physicians within the pod.
Robust clinical infrastructure, including Epic, Dragon dictation, and DAX ambient documentation tools.
Inpatient Services
10–13 weeks of inpatient service annually, including 8–10 weeks with weekend coverage.
Serving as overseeing attending for an APP led inpatient team; responsibilities include morning rounds, care coordination, and consultative support.
Teaching Service: Oversight of resident teams
CVICU Service: Reserved for non invasive cardiologists with appropriate critical care training and/or experience
Call & Weekend Coverage
Weekday and weekend call shared across NI faculty
On average, one weekend per month (Friday night to Monday morning)
On average, one weeknight every three weeks
Weekend call can be bundled with inpatient service assignments
