Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center’s Abdominal Core Health Program is seeking a fellowship-trained abdominal wall reconstruction surgeon to join the Division of General & Gastrointestinal Surgery. This position is designed for a junior faculty member with focused expertise in complex hernia and abdominal wall reconstruction who is seeking to build a subspecialized elective surgical practice within a high-volume, academically active environment.

The successful candidate will practice in the Greater Charlotte Market (Carolinas Medical Center, Atrium Health Pineville) and hold a faculty appointment through Wake Forest School of Medicine, with opportunities for clinical excellence, teaching, program development, and academic advancement.

Practice Environment

Based at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, a nationally recognized tertiary and quaternary referral center with access to state-of-the-art operating rooms, advanced minimally invasive and robotic platforms, an established referral base for complex abdominal wall cases and collaborative, team-oriented surgical culture.




Highlights

The candidate will maintain an elective general surgery practice aligned with abdominal wall and hernia care without a requirement for emergency general surgery coverage, participate in multidisciplinary collaboration, working alongside plastic surgery, colorectal surgery, anesthesia, and perioperative services, engage in resident, fellow, and medical student education as part of the Wake Forest School of Medicine academic mission, participate in clinical quality initiatives, outcomes tracking, and pathway development, and contribute to scholarly activity, including clinical research, presentations, or publications, consistent with rank and interest.


Primary Responsibilities

·       Provide elective surgical care for patients with complex abdominal wall pathology, including:

·       Ventral, incisional, recurrent, and parastomal hernias

·       Loss of abdominal domain and traumatic hernias

·       Inguinal hernias and athletic pubalgia

·       Perform advanced abdominal wall reconstruction procedures, including:

·       Open, minimally invasive, and robotic approaches

·       Component separation techniques

·       Thoughtful application of mesh-based strategies


Academic Appointment

  • Wake Forest University School of Medicine
  • Department of Surgery
  • Academic rank: Assistant or Associate Professor (commensurate with experience), Division of General & Gastrointestinal Surgery

Academic Environment

  • Faculty appointment through Wake Forest University School of Medicine

Training and/or Experience Required

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited General Surgery residency
  • Completion of a fellowship with focused training in abdominal wall reconstruction, advanced hernia surgery, or closely related specialty
  • Board certified or board eligible in General Surgery
  • Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in North Carolina
  • Eligibility for appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level at Wake Forest School of Medicine
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient-centered, team-based care
  • Preferred
  • Fellowship training emphasizing complex abdominal wall reconstruction
  • Experience in robotic-assisted abdominal wall surgery
  • Interest in academic surgery, teaching, and clinical investigation
