Highlights

The Chair leads the department and is expected to implement and conduct specific review and evaluation activities that contribute to the preservation and improvement of the quality and efficiency of patient care provided in the Department. The Department Chair is responsible for all clinical and administrative activities of the Department . He/She is also expected to serve as a voting member of the Medical Executive Committee representing the department. In addition, the Department Chief may be asked to perform additional duties as appropriate by hospital and health system leadership.

Advocate Lutheran General Hospital features a Level III NICU, Level I trauma center, 24-hour MFM, and the highest level of subspecialty care. Advocate Lutheran General Hospital has the second largest maternity program in Illinois with more than 4,000 deliveries each year.

Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as Chairperson of the Department meetings while providing leadership and guidance to the departmental members.
  • Establish, when appropriate, divisions within the Department, and appoint division directors, subject to approval by the Site Leadership, Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Council.
  • Be responsible for the enforcement within the Department of actions taken by the Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Council.
  • Be responsible for the enforcement within the Department of Hospital and System policies,Site Protocols, Medical Staff Bylaws, and the Policies Governing Medical Practices if applicable.
  • Establish and enforce guidelines for the granting of Clinical Privileges and the performance of specified services within the Department.
  • Recommend to the Site Leadership and/ or the Medical Executive Committee the criteria for Clinical Privileges that are relevant to the care provided by the Department.
  • Be responsible for the integration of the Department into the primary functions of the Hospital and for the coordination and integration of interdepartmental and intradepartmental services.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to guide and support the provision of care, treatment and services within the Department.
  • Be responsible for the continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care, treatment, and services provided within the Department.
  • Be responsible for arranging and securing appropriate Departmental emergency service on-call coverage in accordance with the needs of the hospital and health care system.
  • Maintain continuing surveillance of the professional performance of all individuals in the Department who have delineated Clinical Privileges, and report thereon to the Site Leadership, Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Council as part of the reappointment process and at other such times as may be indicated.
  • Make recommendations to the Medical Staff Credentials Committee Site Leadership, Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Council  regarding Staff Membership (e.g. appointment and reappointment) and Clinical Privileges for Department members
Training and/or Experience Required
  • MD/DO
  • Active IL license
  • 5 years in clinical practice preferred
